Gr 3-6 These similarly formatted titles are busy with text, graphs, and well-captioned photographs. Each one starts out with the raw materials used to make the respective items. ( Basketball incorrectly lists plastic as a raw material.) Next, time lines handily sum up basketball from 1891 to 1992, when composite leather balls were developed, and the creation of helmets from 3000 BCE to 1991, when the World Health Organization began to encourage the use of helmets worldwide. Design and stages of production are then explained. Chatty "Guess What" and "Question & Answer" side boxes enhance the texts. In Helmets , one box asks readers, "What are the effects of helmet laws?" The answer is printed upside down, encouraging reader participation and thought. Packaging, distribution, marketing and advertising, and production are clearly explained, as is how the products affect the environment. Nicely designed and well executed, these titles are especially good for reports. Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI
